As far as most people are concerned, Deep Purple's Royal Albert Hall show in September 1969 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra marked the start of Lord's experimentation with rock and orchestral music. Purple weren't the first band to have a go - Keith Emerson had been dabbling in the same area with The Nice - but they were the first to gain coverage in all the national papers as well as the musical press, and over the next few years many others - Procul Harum, Barclay James Harvest, etc.
