"Editor's info:Mostly a vocal genre, Gospel is interpreted both by a chorus and individual soloists and includes many musical forms from religious hymns to recitation backed by music or popular spiritual songs. Closely interrelated with the blues and the spirituals, gospel groups often use electric guitar, drums and bass. Some gospel and spiritual singers, like the great Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972) or ""Sister"" Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973), achieved international renown and were regularly featured in concerts and festivals and enjoyed extensive recording careers. Although in its beginnings Gospel music was mainly heard at the churches in Afro-American neighborhoods, its appearance in recordings made it widely popular and many stars from other genres tried their hand at recording spirituals or gospel songs.
