In 1992, 808 State returned to Manchester from their first world tour, streamlined their lined-up and rebooted their universe as they began to record their fifth album, Gorgeous. The UK dance scene they'd helped to pioneer hadn't paused for breath while they were away in the US. The underground was overground and the resulting commercial landscape - from one-hit-wonder novelty rave tunes to S'Express on the front cover of Smash Hits - made them even more determined to plough their own furrow. And since they now had their own studio, they had more time to work on their music and were able to be more expansive with it.
