Following their acclaimed cycle of the nine Beethoven symphonies for Challenge Classics, conductor Jan Willem de Vriend and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra are now embarking on a series of recordings of the symphonies of Felix Mendelssohn. These will all be released as hybrid SACDs and will incorporate instrumental techniques used when the works were first performed in the 19th century.
The fingerings and bowings for the editions of the Mendelssohn symphonies used in this recording are by Ferdinand David, a friend of Mendelssohn's and concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. He also played a role in the first publications of sonatas by Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann and many other composers.
