St. Louis, Missouri, born jazz guitarist and composer Grant Green was a severely underrated guitar player in his lifetime as critics called him 'one of the great unsung heroes of the jazz guitar'. Green's first professional performance was as a member of a gospel music ensemble at the age of 13, then, via boogie-woogie and blues, he moved to jazz in the early 60's and was discovered by sax-player/bandleader Lou Donaldon. Green's primary influences were saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and that influence gave Green his so recognizable sound. Grant is accompanied by a.o. Michael Brecker & Steve Kahn (Steely Dan's Aja & Gaucho) on this "funky 70's soul-jazz" album. |
