The late great legendary Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria completed this fabulous Afro-Cuban/ jazz project, Mambo Mongo, at the historic RCA Studio A. Not only is this one of Chesky's earliest recordings, but it was one of the last for Studio A, which closed a few days later. This legendary studio's airy, ambient sound had for decades contributed to classic recordings by Frank Sinatra, original Broadway casts and countless classical conductors. Consistent with tradition, Mongo surrounded himself with a tight working band of some of the most talented young musicians of the time, highlighted by noted veteran flutist Hubert Laws and Valentin.
