| Charlie Babbit (Tom Cruise) to młody biznesmen, który przeżywa poważne kłopoty finansowe w swojej firmie. Kiedy umiera jego ojciec okazuje się, że cały majątek zapisał na rzecz szpitala psychiatrycznego, w którym przebywa cierpiący na autyzm brat Charliego - Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Charlie porywa brata, mając nadzieję na uzyskanie połowy spadku. Początkowo Raymond doprowadza go do szału, jednak z czasem wraz ze wzajemnym zrozumieniem, między braćmi nawiązuje się uczucie przyjaźni i miłości.
