28 TRACKS SHOWCASING CHARLES' BREAKTHROUGH PERIOD AND MANY OF THE FINEST SONGS OF HIS CAREER One of the towering figures of 20th century music, Ray Charles was the innovator who synthesised such disparate musical forms as gospel, rhythm & blues, rock & roll, big band and jazz into the form that came to be known as soul'. Ray certainly had plenty of the base material required to perform such alchemy, having overcome enormous personal tragedy during his early years, not least via the loss of his sight but also as a result of drug addiction, the traumatic death of his brother and being a black boy in the deep south bought up by a single mother in an age of bigotry and ultra conservatism.
