Before the chart-toppers and eccentric spelling, Slade were a group with an impressive facility with other people's material as well as a burgeoning song craft of their own. Inspired and intelligent, tasteful and sophisticated, Beginnings and Play It Loud document a group evolving into a major rock force. They were called Ambrose Slade when debut album Beginnings' was released in April 1969.
