Fame and celebrity being what they are, it is no surprise when the famous and celebrated are championed by the virtually unknown. And when such behavior is channeled through the medium of song, the results can be truly horrific. Luckily, however, tribute records' are generally few and far between and even the most notorious of artists can feel honored if just one solitary cheese-fest of musical praise is composed in their name. But when one Elvis Aaron Presley, of Memphis, Tennessee, stepped up to the mic in the early mid-1950s, and in so doing blew the dust off Mars, the genre was re-born. Pencils were sharpened at publishers from Tin Pan Alley to Denmark Street and, anyone who could hum a tune or rhyme super' with duper' had a job waiting. [...more...]
