Adams zadebiutowała w 1988 roku płytą "Just as I Am". Jej talent eksplodował w połowie lat dziewięćdziesiątych. To wtedy odbyła trasę koncertową wraz z Kirkiem Franklinem i The Family. Krążek "Yolanda Live in Washington" (1996r.) został nominowany do nagrody Grammy, a kolejny album koncertowy - "Mountain High Valley Low" - zdobył tą prestiżową statuetkę.
