Eric Clapton wielokrotnie deklarował, że JJ Cale to dla niego najważniejsza postać w muzyce rockowej, otwarcie przyznając się do wielkiego wpływu Cale'a na swoją działalność artystyczną. Clapton kilkukrotnie na przestrzeni lat nagrywał swoje wersje utworow Cale'a - m.in. "After Midnight" i "Cocaine".
