Oldfield, poza partiami orkiestry, nagrał całość w swoim domowym studiu. Wykorzystał też najnowsze wówczas komputery do stworzenia sekcji multimedialnej płyty. Słynny pisarz napisał krótką notkę do książeczki. "The Songs Of Distant Earth" osiągnął duży sukces na brytyjskiej liście albumów. W Wielkiej Brytanii płyta pokryła się złotem.
