Mars Volta to przede wszystkim Cedric Bixler-Zavalas (wokale) i Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (gitary) - dwaj muzycy, któ-rzy wcześniej przez sześć lat stanowili podporę zespołu At The Drive-In. Zmęczeni tamtą muzyką postanowili zrealizować nowy projekt - Mars Volta. Ich debiutancka płyta to typowy "concept album". Historia inspirowana jest samo-bójstwem bliskiego przyjaciela Omara i Cedrika i opisuje fantastyczne światy, w których znalazł się on po zapadnięciu w śpiączkę. Muzycznie album nawiązuje do progresywnego rocka z lat 70. Słychać na nim echa King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Fugazi, Jane's Addiction, Can, Santany, Spirit, a nawet Miles'a Davis'a z tamtych czasów.
