From Alabama, the daughter of a minister, Willie Mae ""Big Mama"" Thornton made her mark in the early 1950s in Houston, recording for the Peacock label. A big-voiced singer like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith before her, Thornton also played drums and harmonica. She was a real individual with a charismatic, at times intimidating, presence. A riveting performer, even in her later years when drugs and alcohol emaciated her once grand girth, Thornton is most remembered for being the first, years before Elvis Presley, to record ""Hound Dog,"" and for having written ""Ball and Chain,"" a signature song for Janis Joplin.
