1.Disc 1. Ordinary Supermen
When NASA selected seven men to become the country's first astronauts in 1959, they ushered in a bold new space age. They were all test pilots who understood the enormous risks involved in an untried vertical launch on a top rocket.
NASA and the Mercury Seven embarked on a journey into the unknown. Its rocket technology was unproven and the risks were enormous. No one knew what the outcome would be or if the rigorous training hours would prepare the astronauts for travelling in excess of 17,000 miles per hour on a converted intercontinental ballistic missile.

1.Disc 2. Friends & Rivals
A new group of astronauts arrived at NASA. Their mission - to take the first courageous steps towards landing a man on the Moon.
Every stage of the space programme was driven forward by the United States' desire to be the leaders of the space race. When the soviets annouced that their astronaut had performed a spacewalk, it made NASA more determined than ever to be the first nation to put a man on the moon.

1.Disc 3. Landing The Eagle
By 1967, the Apollo programme was preparing for the ultimate prize of the space race, landing humans on the Moon. NASA's engineers, scientists and astronauts worked around the clock to conquer a new technology which would enable three astronauts to be launched into space at the same time. But as they tested the command module, NASA experienced its first disaster. On January 27, 1967, a fire broke out in the pressurised capsule of Apollo 1, resulting in the deaths of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee. It was an unprecedented tragedy that changed NASA forever.

1.Disc 4. The Explorers
NASA has successfully landed two astronauts on the Moon. Now the payoff in scientific knowledge was about to be released.
Scientific research was a primary objective for the flight of Apollo 13 and all the crew undertook extensive geology training prior to launch.

1.Disc 5. The Shuttle
In its first twenty years, NASA launched capsules carrying a maximum of three people. But new requirements for a bigger cargo bay prompted a breakthrough in spacecraft design. The development of the reusable Shuttle sparked a revolutionary approach to space travel and NASA called in the pioneers of its human space efforts to help usher in this new, modern age.

1.Disc 6. A Home In Space
A scientific breakthrough and one of the most complex instruments ever built, the Hubble Space Telescope was expected to transform our understanding of the Universe. Billions of dollars over budget and ten years behind schedule, NASA finally launched The Hubble in April 1990 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. But it immediately became clear that NASA had a serious problem with the main mirror on its orbiting telescope. Hubble, the all-seeing eye into deep space, was near-sighted.

1.Disc 7. Base Camp Moon
It is hard to believe that in the year 2008 it has been nearly 40 years since anyone has set foot on the Moon, but NASA's latest mission is planning to change all that. The next time humans land on the Moon they will be staying, building a base camp where the astonauts and scientists will live.
But the Moon is an inhospitable prospect for human life, it lacks oxygen, food and water and is covered in a potentially lethal fine dust.

1.Disc 8. Mars: The Quest For Life
1999 was not a good year for the team of NASA scientists in charge of Ź
Project Polar Lander. Their mission was to send a craft to Mars, beam Ź
photos of the planet direct to Earth and allow scientist testiing ever Ź
undertaken in space. The project unequivocally failed when the landing Ź
radar on the capsule malfunctioned. The assembled group of scientists Ź
listened in disbelief and sadness as their years of work was lost.
