| To nagranie live powstało w trakcie koncertów w Berlinie w 2003 r., a było to niedługo po tym, jak Simon Rattle zainaugurował Fidelio Salzburg Easter Festival, obejmując stanowisko dyrektora artystycznego imprezy. Sam Rattle mówił: "Beethoven mówi ci dokłakdnie gdzie jesteś, w każdym znaczeniu tego słowa - muzycznie, duchowo, rytmicznie, w kontekście wyobraźni". Październik 2002 r. przyniósł Rattlowi pierwszy koncert, jako dyrektor Berliner Philharmoniker. "Jest rodzaj energii, pasji i nieustraszenia w sposobie ich gry" - mawiał. "Dla muzyki takiej, jak Beethovena, która zdaje się wymagać więcej energii i intenstywności, niż ktokolwiek może dać, stanowią idealne połączenie" - dodawał.
