In 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp organised a benefit
concert to raise money for family farms struggling with insurmountable debt and
threatened by foreclosure. On the 22nd of September 80,000 spectators packed
out the Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois to join Young, Nelson,
Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, BB King, Billy Joel and a host of others in a landmark gig
that raised over nine million dollars in aid to family farms. When Farm Aid was
eventually convened as a formal organization, Nelson, Young, and Mellencamp
were included on the board of directors, and the benefit concert became an
annual event.
